Interval hypoxia-hyperoxia training (IHHT) represents a form of simulated altitude training in which the air pressure remains constant and only the oxygen content of the breathing air varies. In this training, participants alternate between taking in low-oxygen and high-oxygen air. This simulates the ascent and descent of a mountain and trains the body to use oxygen efficiently, similar to altitude training. IHHT can be performed with special hypoxia devices and masks.
It is of great importance to understand that the results of IHHT may vary depending on the training condition, individual response and the intensity as well as duration of the oxygen reduction phases. To develop a safe and effective IHHT program, we recommend the assistance of a qualified professional.
Each person is individual, so there is no standardized answer to the optimal duration, frequency, and intensity of IHHT. It depends on your personal circumstances, goals, body reactions and possible side effects. However, here are a few general recommendations:
Duration: A typical IHHT session usually lasts 30 to 50 minutes, with hypoxia and hyperoxia phases lasting 3–5 minutes each.
Frequency: For a training period of four to six weeks, we ideally recommend two to three IHHT sessions per week to give your body enough time to adapt and recover.
Intensity: During the hypoxia phases, the oxygen concentration is usually between 9% and 15%, which corresponds to a simulated altitude of around 3,000 to 5,000 meters.
At the beginning, short tests are made to determine which dosage is the right one. In the second step, the oxygen content in the blood and the pulse are determined using a pulse oximeter. The last step is to put on a breathing mask. The application is performed comfortably while lying down. You breathe in the different oxygen concentrations in a relaxed manner. Another accompanying measurement of heart rate variability indicates how well the body can compensate for the training.
One can usually assume 3 to 5 months. Other factors such as diet, nutritional supplements and exercise, as well as regular respiratory training, are also very important. Ideally, you should integrate regular IHHT training into your daily routine to reap the benefits.
Statutory health insurance companies do not yet pay for IHHT therapy. Private health insurance usually covers the costs of therapy. If you are unsure about the coverage of costs, please clarify this with your health insurance.

There may be a mild headache at the beginning, which often disappears a day after treatment. This side effect is most evident during intense traninig sessions. Mild fatigue or exhaustion is also possible.
